We are very sad to inform you that Edwin Orton went to be with the Lord at 10pm on Saturday 4th July. Edwin was used by God to establish the Birmingham City Mission in 1966 and he led the work until 1997 when he retired. Since then he has held the position of President of BCM and regularly spoken at churches about our work even up until recent years.
Edwin had boundless energy and a big vision, encouraging others around the UK to catch the vision of City Mission work. City Missions in cities like Coventry, Swansea and Worcester caught the ‘spark’ from Edwin. Along with others he helped to establish the ‘British Association of City Missions’ which has gone on from strength to strength and is now called ‘City Mission Movement UK’.
He also travelled the world inspiring people to reach out with the gospel and Missions in Madrid, Bombay and Kolkata have much to thank him for. At BCM’s ‘Silver Jubilee’ celebration in 1991, held at the International Convention Centre, Edwin invited delegates from Missions around the world to attend, and at that event the ‘City Missions World Association’ came into being.
There will be many around the world who will mourn the passing of dear Edwin but in their hearts, they will give thanks to God that they had the privilege of knowing such a faithful servant of the Lord.
Please pray for his four children and the wider family in the coming months.
