Hilary lovingly cared for her husband, James, until he died. After losing him she became very depressed. James had been supported by ElderLink staff member, Sue, who continued to visit Hilary in her home. This is her story.
‘I was looking after my husband all the time until I collapsed. Sue from the Mission used to come and see my husband and she made me feel a lot better because she always sat with me and said a prayer. When my husband passed away she came again to ask me to come to the Mission’s lunch clubs, so I did. Because I was deaf, I was always in the silent world, but at the Mission I felt a lot better because I met a lot of caring people.
I became deaf some years ago when I learned to swim and burst both ear drums. I had an operation and for about three weeks I could hear the birds sing and I thought that was wonderful but then I had an infection and lost it again. I was back in the silent world. But when I went to the Mission I realised that Jesus is with us all the time. So now, when I go out, I walk down the road and I think, ‘I’ll be alright because Jesus is with me, I won’t fall over.’ And this is how wonderful it is to go to the Mission. And when I see Rachel and Lynda and Sue and all of the others, Jesus is there all the time.
Now, when I’m at home alone, I don’t worry. When I was at the hospital having the 90 minute tests, they couldn’t get the hearing that I wanted. So, the tests were going up on the screen for a lot of the 90 minutes, and then, as I sat there, I had a feeling that Jesus was in the room and he touched the screen. And I could hear. Now, when I’m at home alone, I don’t worry because I know that Jesus is with me. I talk to him all the time.
A miracle happened to me. Jesus has given me the hearing. To hear, it’s absolutely wonderful, but after all those years, I’m not used to it. I can now hear background noises, and I’ve got to learn to separate the background noises. They tell me at the hospital that I’ve got to do that, but what I do is pray to make the background noises fainter so I now have almost normal hearing. It’s wonderful.
Thank you so much to Sue for making sure that I came to the Mission. When my husband died I didn’t think that I’d see her again, but she came and that day, when that happened, just made my world.’
