Open the Book began in 1999 and now regularly reaches over half a million children with classic Bible stories during Collective Worship (often referred to as assemblies). Open the Book teams are made up of members of the local church or from several churches working in partnership who go into primary schools to deliver a 10 minute Bible story assembly. Some Birmingham schools are asking for Open the Book and more volunteers are needed to meet the demand.
Birmingham City Mission is partnering with Open the Book to provide training and support for new teams seeking to serve schools in Birmingham and the surrounding area. The FREE one-day training focuses on working in a multi- faith context. This is highly relevant for Birmingham, a city where the majority of children are born into families with a faith background other than Christian.
Training sessions are from 9.15am to 3.15pm (with a 30 minute lunch break). Completion of this training is sufficient for an individual to register as an Open the Book story teller. The next training dates are:
• Tue 5th May
• Thu 11th June
• Wed 15th July
All courses are free of charge and take place at BCM HQ, The Clock Tower, 2 Langdon Street, Birmingham B9 4BP
‘Open the Book is a great project and pairing it with BCM’s vast knowledge about working in Birmingham’s diverse schools is incredibly valuable. After attending the training, I feel a lot more confident and excited about being a part of this new initiative.’ Lynn Braden, Pavilion Christian Community
