At the beginning of September we began a new phase at ElderLink. Instead of lunch clubs we have instigated ‘coffee & cake clubs’ on Wednesday mornings, Wednesday afternoons and Thursday afternoons.
We have been very aware of safety – volunteers and staff test for Covid on Tuesday evening, and our elderly friends are temperature checked as they come in.
The clubs begin with drinking, eating and chatting, followed by a service when a staff member or volunteer tells their story on a chosen theme, for example God is my friend, God brings joy, God is faithful. There is then opportunity for more chat before our guests leave.
Our elderly folk are travelling by taxi or private car. Please pray for confidence for our friends to come back as there are still many who are too worried to return.
Tina Brooker (Lunch Clubs Co-ordinator) and I have had the privilege of going into three care homes on Thursday mornings to take a service. We have already seen God work in the lives of some residents as we have shared about the Lord. Pray that these homes will continue to welcome us each month. We plan to hold Harvest, Remembrance and Christmas services over the coming weeks.

We’ve been busy visiting homes as so many of our friends are still unsure about going out. They have lost confidence and in some cases, their mobility has worsened. We have been trying to build up their courage to go out and put the pandemic in perspective. The important message we share at the moment – that we have faith and hope in the Lord and that’s where our security comes from.
It’s always good to see a conversation which has started in a low mood with negative comments ending with a thankful prayer and a smile! Our delight is to see our clients pleased to see us. Very often we are the only people they see apart from carers and medical professionals. It was especially encouraging recently to see one client, who is quite unresponsive in most conversation, show a real positive reaction when we prayed.
