Harvest is a particularly busy time at the BCM Resource Centre. Staff and volunteers on the vans are out picking up food collections from schools and churches (over 60 last year, not including the collections brought in!). Many more volunteers date the tins and packets to stock up the shelves.
THANK YOU very much to everyone donating food this harvest. Without your collections we would not be able to give out thousands of food parcels through the rest of the year to people struggling and in great need.
Many people pass through the Resource Centre each day. They may have recently come out of jail and have no benefits set up. Or moved off the street into a hostel. Struggling with universal credit. Escaping from an abusive relationship. A single mum trying to feed her family. A refugee fleeing from their own country.
They come for food, toiletries, furniture, bedding, clothing or even just good company! We interviewed a handful of our Resource Centre guests during the summer…

‘We are from Midland Heart Housing Association, working with vulnerable people in the community aged from 25 and we help them set up their accommodation. The Resource Centre is useful for us to support people who come from backgrounds where they haven’t got any funds and get them their furniture.’
‘I use the Resource Centre for the food bank, furniture and all different things. Chris has been a very good help over the years for all my family. It means a lot to me and it’s nice to come in and meet people that are very friendly.’
‘You’ve just helped me get a new bed and set it up and I love it. I need help to furnish my flat because I can’t afford it myself, I can’t afford to get expensive things. I come and it makes me feel comfortable and I can afford to get something new! Thank you – you’ve been amazing and I’m just so grateful.’
‘I get a total feeling of calmness when I come here. I came in one day and I was crying and said that my daughter had just passed away and I didn’t know how to cope and when I came in, I’m not lying, I felt such a sense of warmth and comfort, that people really understood what I felt.’
