BCM’s Youth Team Co-ordinator, John Platt, has been joined this term by two fresh faces. Let’s meet the new recruits…
I came to know Jesus as my Lord and Saviour in my early 20s from an agnostic background through three things: the Bible, the personal testimony of those around me, and prayer. I was surprised by how much I had got wrong about Jesus. Reading the Bible led me to naturally want to pray to God and ask him if he was really there. Before I knew it, I found that I had indeed been granted faith by God!
For several years I have been actively serving within my own church, as well as working as a secondary school science teacher. In the past two years I have been seeking the Lord about full-time Christian work after feeling that I was being called to this by him. Various avenues I explored didn’t seem right, but when I saw the advert for the youth worker post I immediately felt peace about it. Again, before I knew it, I was sitting in an interview and then receiving news offering me the job!
So far, the biggest challenge for me in the new role has been adjusting to a different way of working, with a different pace. I am enjoying the youth team ethos very much, grateful already for the leadership and guidance from John.
I have been going to church since I was born, but I decided to make a commitment to God when I was 8 years old after a holiday club week. I got baptised when I was 16.
I have always known God to be there, and I can’t imagine life without Jesus. Although over the years I may have gone off the road, Jesus has always been faithful to me.
A few years ago I believed God was calling me into youth ministry and at my church weekend away, two other people and I prayed about this. Move forward a few years, and I saw this job advertised on my friend’s Facebook page, so I prayed about it, and here I am.
I have enjoyed my time so far at the Mission. At the moment I’m still trying to find my feet. It was great getting to see how the other departments worked – ElderLink was a favourite of mine.
Both Peter and James are looking forward to getting stuck into a full programme of assemblies, clubs, lessons and Fulfil this term. Pray for them and John as they seek to serve, support and enrich the young people of Birmingham, sharing with them the good news of Jesus.
